Message from the Chair of the Biology Study Program at UBB

Monica Kharisma Swandi, S.Si., M.Si

The issuance of the Minister of National Education's decree through the Directorate General of Higher Education No. 52/D/O/2006 dated April 12, 2006, marked the beginning for the Biology Study Program, which operates under the coordination of the Faculty of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Biology, to contribute to sustainable development in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province. The Bangka Belitung Islands consist of two main islands, Bangka and Belitung, surrounded by dozens of smaller islands. The bio-physical condition of the province is relatively poor in nutrients, with acidic pH and low biodiversity. Furthermore, tin mining activities have exacerbated environmental damage and reduced biodiversity.

Rehabilitation of post-tin mining land, biodiversity conservation, and the management of biological resources can support sustainable development in this province. These three focus areas require skills in biological sciences. Since the establishment of the Biology Study Program, various research projects have been conducted by both lecturers and students, successfully uncovering various local advantages of this province. However, these local advantages have yet to be fully developed and require further enhancement to improve community welfare in the post-tin era.

The Biology Study Program continues to make various efforts to excel in the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education. As of November 3, 2020, the Biology Study Program became the first program at Bangka Belitung University to receive an accreditation rating of 'UNGGUL' based on LAMSAMA No.132/SK/LAMSAMA/Akred/S/XII/2024, valid from Desember 16, 2024, to Desember 15, 2026.This achieved rating serves as a renewed motivation for the Biology Study Program to continuously improve the quality and quantity of its Tri Dharma activities, aiming to achieve excellence in the future.
